Throw a Cowboy-themed BBQ

It’s summertime and that means grill time! And now that we’re all able to gather again, why not make this summer a memorable one? Here, we’ll give you some tips for throwing a cowboy-themed BBQ just like they did back in the day. Read on and get inspired to bring your loved ones together for a party they’ll not soon forget. There’s an easy recipe below too. Yee ha!

Gather Your Posse

Skip the email invites and mail them the old-fashioned way. Look online for some fun designs or make your own. For example, design a mock-up “Wanted” poster and write something like “Wanted! We want you to come to our backyard BBQ on XXX at XXX. Wear your favorite cowboy shirt, boots or hat and come join us for some cowboy-themed food and fun!”

Get Creative with the Décor

If you don’t live on a sprawling ranch (most of us don’t), but we know there are a lucky few, create a backdrop to set the stage. Decorate with things like bandanas and red and white checkered tablecloths. Find some cacti to scatter on tables and maybe find a few bales of hay and old lassos laying around. Hang some western-themed paper lanterns. Let your imagination run wild. Google is your friend when it comes to getting ideas. Have you heard of a little site called Pinterest? We thought so.

Plan Some Activities and Entertainment

For the most part, your guests will likely enjoy just being with each other and enjoying the food, drink and the great outdoors, but throwing a few activities into the mix just to shake things up a bit can be fun too.  Know a neighbor who’s mastered the guitar? Have a cousin who’s a genius on the fiddle? Tell them to bring their instruments and have a jam session for the ages. You might also think about setting some areas with games like horseshoes and cornhole.

Focus on the Food

Cowboy cooking has come a long way. Today, it’s more than just baked beans over an open fire (though that’s pretty cool, too!) The choices for what to serve at your cowboy bash are endless. There’s everything from pulled pork and brisket – slow and low – to smoked sausage, grilled steaks, turkey chili, grilled corn and so much more! The sky’s really the limit. One item that’s a delicious staple and goes with everything is cornbread. This one has jalapenos and Monterey jack cheese and your guests will gobble it up. Make sure to have some slabs of butter nearby too. Oh – and don’t forget the s’mores!

Jalapeno Cheese Corn Bread

9 servings


  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 T baking powder
  • ½ t salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3 T vegetable oil
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack Cheese
  • 1 can whole kernel corn (11 ounces), drained
  • 3 T pickled jalapenos, drained and chopped
  • 2 ounces pimento strips, drained and chopped


  • Preheat oven to 375. Lightly grease cast iron skillet.
  • Combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder and salt in large bowl. Combine milk, eggs and oil in medium bowl. Add corn meal mixture and stir till just combined. Add cheese, corn, jalapenos and pimentos. Pour batter into cast iron skillet.
  • Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Serve warm with butter!
